Cover for 'Unicorn Western'

Cast out from the magical kingdom of The Realm and into the dying desert of the Sands beyond, Marshal Clint Gulliver and his unicorn Edward have finally found peace in the small and dusty town of Solace. For the first time since leaving The Realm, Clint has dared to be happy, getting hitched to his bride to be, Mai. But when the town faces a deadly approaching enemy, the gunslinger feels compelled unholster his seven-shooters to face it... and the dark magic it brings with it.

From the creators of Yesterday's Gone (Platt) and Fat Vampire (Truant) comes this reinvention of both the western genre and unicorn lore. Written for children and teens -- but complex and awesome enough for adult readers -- Unicorn Western is "Harry Potter without wizards, with gunslingers, with talking unicorns and epic unicorn fights, and with more turkey pie."

  • Clint and Mai's wedding in the Sprawl town of Solace is disrupted when the water reader sees the return of the town's old nemesis and predicts coming doom.

  • Clint heads off to rally his unicorn partner, Edward, and together they head off to round up a posse to face Hassle Stone. Back at the Otel, Mai argues to keep Clint from his dangerous duty.

  • Teddy, the town's orphan, shoves his way into Clint and Edward's defunct posse as the water reader reports a disturbing new development about a rider who travels with Hassle Stone. Together, the posse rides out to find a party of ominous men palavering by a stew hole in the Sands.

  • Edward's magic protection allows the three-man group to eavesdrop on the bandits at the stew hole, where Clint learns the identity of the dark rider. Afterward, Clint explains the terrible nature of the unicorn of a different color.

  • Sending Teddy off, Clint and Edward wait for Kold and Stone's arrival at the High Rock. After learning of a gambit, they return hurriedly to town to face Stone's band of men head-on.

  • After the men battle, Clint finds Dharma Kold... leaving Edward to face his old nemesis: the black unicorn Cerberus. Finally, Clint discovers the true nature of Kold's desires on the town of Solace.

This was so funny! I loved the humor, and though there's lots of sillyness in the concept, it's pretty serious after all. Built like a true western - just with unicorns, pink smoke and stuff. Oh, and how I laughed at the "fruity magic" part. That was brilliant! Well done, ...
